This calculator finds pressure from a force and the area it acts on. The same force on a smaller area produces higher pressure — which is why sharp knives cut and snowshoes stop you sinking.

What the symbols mean

Worked example

A 200 N force pressing on 0.5 m² gives a pressure of 200 / 0.5 = 400 Pa. Concentrate that same force onto 0.01 m² and the pressure leaps to 20,000 Pa.

How the formula works

Pressure is force spread over area. Because it is force divided by area, shrinking the area raises the pressure even when the force stays the same. In fluids, pressure also increases with depth as the weight of fluid above grows.
